In general, electricity accounts for about 80% of a hotel’s energy consumption. The Surchat family, owner of the Au Parc Hotel in Fribourg, is a pioneer in the field of energy saving and especially electricity. Therefore they were very pleased with the launch of the OFF campaign of the State of Fribourg.
For Raymond Surchat, the hotel manager, this is not only a responsibility towards future generations, but also an essential investment to reduce operating costs in the long term. Numerous measures were already taken, when the building was constructed in 1985, which was designed by his father, architect and hotel owner by passion. The hot water is heated from 6 to 45 degrees thanks to heat recovery from the 15 compressors in the technical room. Other heat recovery systems then bring it to 65°C.
The designer of the building had the ingenious idea of placing the underfloor heating directly in the concrete slab. With this system, the water temperature can be reduced by 7 to 8 °C. In addition, connecting the building to the FRICAD district heating network in Groupe E generates annual savings of around CHF 40,000.
In 2013, the 1,200 allogeneic 35W light bulbs were replaced by LEDs. The rest of the lighting has been completely replaced by energy-saving bulbs. In addition, motion detectors have been installed in all public sanitary facilities. In 2012, the Parc Hotel invested CHF 150,000 in improving the efficiency of its electrical systems and devices, and every year more than CHF 50,000 is spent on reducing the energy consumption.
In 2013, the 75 rooms of the hotel have been renovated in accordance with environmental standards.
In 2013, the 75 rooms of the hotel have been renovated in accordance with environmental standards. Some examples of the many details that were considered: An efficient laundry management system, the general switching off of lights by magnetic cards, the replacement of minibars with appliances that consume 60% less electricity, upholstery recycled from boat sails, perfectly insulated windows and doors, LED lighting, etc.
In conclusion, the hotel owner points out that today, entrepreneurs must invest in energy savings, because with a return on investment of 3 to 5 years the profitability is simply excellent. Not to mention that energy costs will inevitably rise in the future. As an incorrigible optimist, Raymond Surchat trusts the Fribourg citizens who are committed to conserving today’s resources and will continue to do so in order to ensure the future of future generations.
